My Ultimate Cloth Diaper Review: Flip vs. BumGenius Elementals vs. BumWorks

In our home we use 3 different types of cloth diapers: Flip, BumGenius Elementals, and BumWorks. Each has it's ups and downs, and each is used for a specific time in our family. I am here to tell you my opinion on each and (if I had to redo it) which I would choose as my sole choice!
First, we have the Flip cloth diapers. These diapers are an insert diaper. This means you can reuse the cover multiple times a day, unless soiled of course. How these works is you have an insert that looks kind of like a big cloth pad, you stick it in the center of the cover and off you go! We use these strictly for day time use. They work great and absorb everything really well. There are different options for inserts - we use the Stay-Dry One Size Inserts. I love these because you can fold them over and they grown with your child. Same as the covers. The covers have multiple layers/rows of snaps so you can adjust the fit as your child grows. Now, for the cost. Each cover runs about $15, and a box of 3 inserts is the same. For one child we had a stash of 7 covers and 20 inserts, with doing diaper laundry twice a week that seemed to be plenty! Overall, I love these diapers and would keep using them, but if I had to pay for them all myself to start up and spend $210 just for day time use, I may have reconsidered. Fortunately we were gifted our stash from my former nanny family.
The BumGenius Elemental diapers are our night time wears. These are super absorbent and hardly leaked on us! They are an all-in-one diaper, which means you just put it on like a normal disposable diaper and take it off the same, nothing fancy here! I really like these diapers because they hold up for 12-13 hours of sleep (trust me with cloth diapering it is a blessing when you find something that works for your night times)! The only major issue I have with these is that they seemed to gather the ever dreaded ammonia smell sooner than any other brand. Nothing extra rinsing and washing wouldn't fix, but if you aren't careful your poor baby will be left with a ammonia rash - which is super painful! These, like the Flip, grow with your child through a series of snaps. Our stash on these was 6 diapers, doing wash twice a week. Luckily, we got these on sale, but normal price is about $25 a piece! Now, I am not bashing the price for quality here - but I do believe that $25 is pushing it for one diaper! Again, we were blessed to be gifted these before the arrival of our little one.
Lastly we have a new up and coming brand, BumWorks. I received two of these diapers as a gift at my diaper party for baby number two! At first I was a little hesitant to open them because it was a brand I was not familiar with, nor had heard of. BumWorks diapers are a pocket cloth diaper. This means you can use them like the Flip diapers, laying the insert in the cover, or you can stuff an insert in a pocket located in the rear of the diaper for extra absorbency. As I had never used pocket diapers before, I had to experiment with them. Turns out I LOVE them! They are great for both day and night! I ended up buying four more packs myself for our diaper bag and those late nights at grandma's house! These are perfect for traveling too. We have had no issue with leaks, and when you are getting ready to leave someone's house WAY past the kids' bedtime (and you know they will fall asleep in the car) these are excellent to double stuff and use as a night time diaper. And the best part, you get 2 diapers and 2 inserts for $24, not to mention a 6 pack of inserts runs for the same price as the Flip's 3 pack!! They are affordable and they work! I was so impressed by this brand.
If I would have discovered these diapers sooner, we would have stocked our stash with only BumWorks as they are very user friendly and work for all day and night changes! Not to mention the almost 50% difference in price! If I continued to do laundry twice a week, and would just use BumWorks diapers, I would need maybe 10 for each boy (probably not even that), which would be a total of $240 for a whole collection! Compare that to the Flip and BumGenius combined total of over $530!! Now, please do not get me wrong - I in no way am bashing Flip or BumGenius, we actually still use both in our home. I am just pointing out a good fact that it is worth it to do some research first! As I was gifted almost a whole set of diapers I did not feel the need to research much, so I stuck to what I knew. However, if I did have to start from scratch, I would be going to BumWorks as my first choice!
